Essex CT Town Travel Business Information
Welcome to scenic and historic Essex, Connecticut. The town of Essex has a very diverse and rich background dating to the mid-17th century. William Pratt, William Hide, & John Lay were the three original settlers of Potapoug Point, an area that approximately encompassed the current Essex village. Most of Essex (as well as Deep River and Chester) was initially known as the Potapoug Quarter of the Saybrook Colony.
In 1852, Essex became a town by itself (although called Old Saybrook until 1854 when Essex became the official name), and in 1859 the Centerbrook section was added.
