With no independent government of its own, Mystic is only recognized as a municipality within the state, located in the towns of Groton and Stonington. Mystic began as a thriving shipbuilding community during the clipper ship era.

The town of Mystic was used during the shooting of the film, Mystic Pizza, but the restaurant was not used. Various scenes from the movie Amistad were also shot at the Mystic Seaport. Even though Mystic has had its Hollywood debut, the laid-back New England feel remains throughout the town.
