The Town of Ledyard was founded in 1653 by settlers John Gager and Robert Allyn, who received land grants to settle along the eastern banks of the Thames River. In 1705, Groton was incorporated as a separate town from New London. Twenty years later, the Connecticut General Assembly designated what is now Ledyard as the North or Second Society of Groton.

On May 1836, the North Society was incorporated and changed its name to Ledyard in honor of Colonel William Ledyard, the slain commander of colonial forces that defended Fort Griswold in 1781.

Today, Ledyard is best known as being the home of Foxwoods Resort Casino – The Largest Casino in the World. Foxwoods and neighboring MGM Grand are located on Route 2 in Ledyard. The Mashantuket Pequot Reservation, Museum and Research Center are also located in Ledyard.
